Design Course

The design of a sprinkler system is paramount to a successful installation and to achieve third party accreditation designers must be able to show competency through the existing schemes by successfully completing competence reviews.

The BAFSA course is the only course to be supported by the three third party certification bodies.

If starting off from scratch it is recommended to start with the Basic Design Course then the Inspection, Intermediate and finally the FHC Course.

Courses are generally followed up by the LPCB Competency exam.

Why choose BAFSA?

BAFSA has been representing the Sprinkler Industry in the UK since 1974.

Throughout the last forty-eight years our highest priority has always been the installation of reliable, well installed and maintained fire sprinkler systems which will operate successfully throughout their lifetime.

To this end BAFSA has supported the standards required by the three third party accreditation bodies and has developed sprinkler installation, design and maintenance courses to support this goal.

BAFSA offers training directly in design for the commercial market and through Sprinktec for the residential & domestic market.

As the recognised professional trade organisation representing the majority of the sprinkler industry – installers, manufacturers and suppliers – BAFSA is uniquely placed to offer professional, unbiased training.

All of the design courses have been sympathetically and professionally developed for on-line delivery reducing participants’ costs and time.

Your Training Facilitator

Alan Crichton, BAFSA’s Design Course Training Facilitator has lectured to over 130 students who have successfully completed at least one of the BAFSA courses.

Alan has a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of the fire protection industry and has worked closely with the UK’s Third Party Accreditation bodies. He is a fire systems project and design engineer with over 20 years’ experience in design and project management of sprinkler systems for industrial, residential, commercial, leisure and health care properties.

Alan is a well-qualified sprinkler design and installation specialist who has more than twenty years’ experience working within the European and UK Sprinkler industry. He has worked with BAFSA for the last four years and during this time has led the BAFSA Technical Committee and provided design and installation training on behalf of BAFSA as well as working with the third party accreditation bodies to ensure that the highest standards of sprinkler installation are achieved by our Members.

Our Design Courses

Basic Design
Competency Review Course

(BSEN12845/LPC Rules: 2015)

This course covers the contents of BSEN12845 from classifications of systems, storage categories and categorisation of goods. The course also covers spacing of heads in different situations; how to size pipework; sprinkler pumps and tanks using pre-calculated methods. On successful completion of this course, participants can progress onto the intermediate and FHC Courses.

  • Classification of systems

  • Storage types and Categories

  • Water Supplies

  • Spacing and Location of Sprinklers

  • Spacing and location of Brackets

  • Component selection

  • Pre – Calc Pipework sizing

  • Calculations

  • System Types and Applications

Intermediate Design
Competency Review Course

(BSEN12845/LPC Rules: 2015)

This has been developed to design systems that are installed to allow extensions by fit-out contractors (commonly known as base build projects) and includes the design of high-rise sprinkler installations including the design of multi-stage pumps. It also covers pumphouse design, how to calculate the requirements of a high-rise system and what information needs to be available to the fit-out contractor.

  • Zoning of Systems

  • Water Supplies (Multistage pumps)

  • Alarms

  • Hydraulic Calculation for High Rise Buildings

Inspection of Sprinkler
Installation Course

(BSEN12845/LPC Rules: 2015)

This covers the inspection and commissioning of fire sprinkler systems. It is ideally suited to consultants, project managers and maintenance engineers who wish to be able to carry out the full commissioning of systems prior to handover. The course covers the inspection of head locations; bracket locations; an understanding of system design for pre calculated systems including system design requirements; head spacing; and how to size pipework.

  • Selecting Densities for warehouse roof protection

  • Determining Densities for roof & Rack Systems

  • Plotting heads in racks

  • Hazen Williams Formula (Hand Calculations)

  • Pressure & Flow Curves

  • ESFR Protection

  • Locating Remote & Favourable areas

  • Hydraulic Calculations (with a calculation Package).

  • Suction Pipe and NPSH Calculations

BAFSA Full Hydraulic Calculation (FHC) Design Competency Refresher Course

The FHC course covers the design of high hazard systems including the design of rack installation, ESFR systems, control mode sprinkler systems. The course also covers basic knowledge of hydraulic calculations for different situations and the requirements on how to carry out a hydraulic calculation, such as different design densities and the shape of areas of operation.

  • Water Supplies

  • Installation Control Valves

  • Spacing and Location of Sprinklers

  • Spacing and Location of Brackets

  • Selection of Sprinkler heads

  • System Components
