Alan Crichton

BAFSA Design Course Training Facilitator

Alan is uniquely qualified to prepare and present the four specialist sprinkler courses offered by BAFSA.

Alan has a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of the fire protection industry. He is a fire systems project and design engineer with over 20 years’ experience in design and project management of sprinkler systems for industrial, residential, commercial, leisure and health care properties

He has prepared manufacture drawings, designed systems and thus has first-hand experience and a sound understanding of the relevant guidance and standards.  He has designed water-based fire suppression systems including sprinklers, deluge, foam and water spray (low pressure and high-pressure).

Alan has led design and drawing offices and managed subcontractors and contractors and has been in charge of design control and quality procedures. Furthermore, he has managed procurement of parts and fabrication; fire alarms; designed and installed water-based systems; undertaken fire risk assessments, site investigations and reports; developed complex systems as well as conducted maintenance planning and quality assurance and auditing. Alan is also a registered CPD presenter and has completed a Train the Trainer course.

He is also BAFSA’s Technical Committee Chairman.

Experience & Expertise

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of Candleriggs market in Glasgow.

  • Full project management of the alterations to the sprinklers system in Hillsbourgh Castle (Queens Residence) in Northern Ireland.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of Phase 8 of John Dewars site in Poniel, this was one of many Whiskey Warehouse projects carried out throughout Scotland.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of Various Foam systems to protect whiskey plants for Diageo throughout Scotland.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of complete Sprinkler, Deluge and Foam

  • Deluge systems for GlaxoSmithKline in Montrose.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of Various roof and Rack systems throughout the UK and Ireland.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on a tight schedule in time for the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow.

  • Design, Installation, and commissioning of complete deluge system for a petrochemical plant complete with pressure vessels and tank protection in Warrington.

  • Worked on many School sprinkler installation contract such as Wick Community Campus, Duloch primary school in Dunfermline and Calderglen High School in East Kilbride.

  • Completed many 25-year sprinkler services to include testing of pipework, heads and also a full review of the system and compiling a detailed report with requirements to bring the systems up to modern day recommendations.

  • Wrote a detailed Specification for the design of the biggest waste to energy plant in Glasgow including anaerobic digesting plant.

  • Created a concept for the Design, Installation and commissioning of a Low pressure water mist system used in glass bottle making plants United glass, Alloa.

  • Wrote a detailed Specification for the design of a high pressure water mist system used in the coal chute at loganate coal fired power station.
